Q: Coffee bean question - What is the difference between brands of gourmet coffee?
I know it's taste, but what I mean is what makes them different? The beans they use? the method of grinding, or roasting, or something else? And how can I, as the consumer, find this information out? will the website tell me what beans they use, where they come from, how they roast it, etc? Or am I SOL.
Thanks for your answers.
-newbie coffee lover
A: The differences are many. First, a lot of the big name companies buy up an entire 'lot' of coffee from a farm, cooperative or a broker. this makes their coffee 'unique.'
Also a lot of companies blend different coffee origins, some to get a better flavor, some to mask odd flavors from the cheap beans they bought.
There are hundreds of coffee farms and plantations in the world, and no two will taste exactly alike.
Also there are several different cultivars within the coffee bean family, each again, provides it's own flavor.
And each tree typically produces two crops a year, and each crop has it's distinct flavors due to rain levels, temperatures, how the bean was handled at picking, how the bean was handled during processing, how the bean was handled after processing, and how the bean was handled during shipping. Was the bean allowed to get too hot intransit? did they get wet in shipping, and how long have they sat in a warehouse.
Get the picture? every bag can be an adventure in taste...
Most coffee brokers that are worth their salt will cup the bean before buying, and cup the bean after delivery. If too much has gone wrong between the two cuppings a good broker will refuse the shipment, others sell it to Floggers, MudwellHorse, Yanka or one of the other sells of slop.
Q: Does anyone know what coffee bean they use for the new McDonalds Gourmet Coffee?
I had it the other weekend and I thought it as some of the best coffee I've had in a while (and only needed to add a teaspoon of sugar)
A: it is arabica coffe bean, I asked to a manager bcs I thought it tasted really good.

What brand and flavor do they use? I've seen posts saying the brand is "Higgins & Burkes" but what flavor or blend is it? I'm a big fan and would love to order the whole bean coffee for home! Thanks!

Q: Gourmet coffee sizes at the grocery store....from 16 oz to 12 oz?
I'm sort of new at drinking coffee, and noticed that the bags of ground / whole bean coffee is mostly 12 oz. Have they ever sold coffee in 1 lb. (or 16 oz) bags? Without knowing for sure, I thought I'd ask the veteran coffee drinkers. My theory would be that yes, they used to sell gourmet stuff by the pound..but reduced size because that's what all food/drink manufacturers do. Thanks for reading.
A: Yes in the past it was sold in 1 Lb. packages. A few years ago coffee took a step rise in price and coffee companies reduced the package size to 12 or 13 once rather than increase the package price.
Q: What is the difference in coffee price? (Starbucks,etc) is it the name or the bean that you are paying for?
I mean, are the beans they use in Folgers just generic? Are the beans treated or prepared differently in the more expensive gourmet coffees to get them to be that much better?
A: it's a little of all the above. the name is famous, and associated with bitter, strong coffee and it is the in-thing, so everyone does it. The bean, because they are imported in smaller numbers from specialty farms, then roasted and ground by the company itself. The big companies because of thier size alone, and the streamlined production are able to offer close to the same thing at a much cheaper price. The small corner coffee houses came about because of the lack of flavor in the coffee made by the big coffee giants. but now that people have spoken and started demanding a little quality for what they pay for, the giants have stepped up and are doing much better.
Q: How much caffeine in chocolate covered coffee beans?
I have gourmet dark-chocolate covered coffee beans.
How much caffeine per serving (1/4 of a cup)? The beans are roasted Arabica beans.
I don't worry about the dark chocolate as much as the coffee beans - how much caffeine per 1/4 whole Arabica beans?
A: At least 266 for a 1/2 cup.
Q: Solving problems that can be modeled by a system of two linear equations?
Jimmy is a partner in an Internet- based coffee supplier. The company offers gourmet coffee beans for $12 per pound and regular coffee beans for $6 per pound. Jimmy is creating a medium-priced product that will sell for $8 per pound. The first thing to go into the mixing bin was 10 pounds of the gourmet beans. How many pounds of the less expensive regular beans should be added?
A: HINT: Write what you know in a table.
Type ………….................. Qty ………. Cost ……… Total
regular coffee beans ………. x ………… 6 …………. x * 6 = 6x
gourmet coffee beans ……. 10 ……….. 12 ………… 10 * 12 = 120
Total …………................. x + 10 …….. 8 …………. (x + 10) * 8 = 8(x + 10)
The first 2 rows of the last column always add up to the third row in that column.
6x + 120 = 8(x + 10)
Distribute and solve.
6x + 120 = 8(x) + 8(10)
6x + 120 = 8x + 80
120 - 80 = 8x - 6x
40 = 2x
20 = x
ANSWER: You need 20 pounds of the regular coffee beans.
Q: How can the following be solved using division?
A local coffee house donates 2 2/3 pounds of gourmet coffee beans to be sold at a local fundraiser. The people running the fundraiser decide to package and sell the coffee beans in 1/2-pound packages. How many 1/2-pound packages can they make?
A: Well, divide 2 2/3 by 1/2 and you will get 16/3 which is the same as 5 1/3. So the amount of FULL 1/2 pound packages they can make would be 5. The 6th bag would only fill 1/3 of the bag so you wouldn't count it. Therefore, your answer is 5.

Q: A Question About Good Coffee?
Last year I went to Guatemala and since returning I have been haunted by the coffee I had in one particular cafe. It was an average cafe by any standards but the coffee served was excellent. Since returning I have tried many different beans whether from a supermarket or Starbucks etc, none of them come even close to how good it was. So the other day I ordered some gourmet Guatemalan coffee from here: http://www.hasbean.co.uk/
the bean I ordered was in the top 10 coffees of Guatemala and is freshly roasted the day before sending. Although it was the closet yet, it still wasn't in the same ball park. I use a French press to brew the coffee, so you experts out there...is it the way I make the coffee or the bean I use, what am I doing wrong?
A: Hi You, I reckon you have done the best thing possible in the first instance by purchasing your coffee from a specialist dealer. Don't bother with places like Starbucks, they are OK for the indiscriminate masses but not for an afficianado.
Do you mean a cafitiere by a french press? If so that is fine. I hope you bought the coffee as beans and you grind them just before brewing the coffee.
Do you drink the coffee black or as a latte type? If the latter using sterilised milk helps to replicate a true continental taste.
Can you remember what kind of machine was used in the cafe? You have managed to source some beans so the problem could be the method of making the coffee. Persevere problems are only solutions in disguise. Coffee making can be a serious business. It took me years to get the taste I wanted, I tried loads of different methods some dreadful, some almost there but found the simple methods were the best in the end. Good Luck.
Q: Where can I buy bulk coffee beans?
I want to use coffee beans for my pink/brown wedding. I have contacted my local Starbucks and Caribou Coffee stores and they don't sell old coffee beans. I would like to buy the cheapest coffee possible. All of the sites I have found on the internet only sell "gourmet." The cheapest I have found is $4.38/lb and that is too high when I need to buy about 50 pounds. Help? :)

Q: I have a killer headache trying to solve math problems. I'll give you 10 points for a right answer.?
Jimmy is a partner in an internet based coffee supplier company. The company offers gourmet coffee beans for $14 per pound and regular coffee beans for $5 per pound. Jimmy is creating a medium-price product that will sell for $7 per pound. The first thing to go into the mixing bin was 10 pounds of the groumet beans. How many pounds of the less expensive regular beans should be added.
an answer to this question would be great but I'd also like to learn how to do this, so if you can explain and give me any helpful hints on how to solve these it would be great. Thanks.
A: Hi,
Write the equation as:
gourmet cost per pound(pounds) + regular cost per pound(pounds) = mixture cost per pound(total pounds)
14(10) + 5(x) = 7(x + 10)
140 + 5x = 7x + 70
70 = 2x
35 = x
Add 35 pounds of the $5 per pound coffee.
A second interesting way to do this is to plot the costs on a number line.
..5....7...............14
--+----+--------------+--
The total difference in price of the 2 coffees is 14 - 5 or $9
The mixture is $2 more than the regular coffee and $7 less than the gourmet coffee. The mixture is 2/9 of the total difference in prices from the regular coffee and 7/9 of the total difference in prices from the gourmet coffee.
Now reverse these fractional amounts. That means that 7/9 of the coffee will be the $5 coffee and 2/9 of the mixture will be gourmet coffee. If 2/9 of the mixture is the added 10 pounds of gourmet coffee, then:
2/9x = 10
2x = 90
x = 45 This means the total mixture will have 45 pounds of coffees. Since 10 pounds were the gourmet beans, then 45 - 10 or 35 pounds were the regular-priced amount.
I hope that helps!! :-)
Q: I was invited to an Easter brunch by a family I don't know well. Should I bring a little gift?
I don't celebrate Easter and don't know if it is appropriate to bring a gourmet bag of coffee beans, tea etc. or a little desert or something. Is this tacky? Should I just bring myself?
A: Bring a pie :)
Or bring flowers.
Something small that everyone can partake from. Like eating a pie or seeing nice flowers as a centerpiece.
Wine is iffy, you don't know the history of the family. Alcoholics? Trouble with Alcohol in the past? You don't know.
